SMOD Standalone is an "updated" version of SMOD client that takes advantages of some Orangebox engine features like LAA flag; it also fixes LUA and introduces a new file structure allowing for smaller 3-rd party SMOD mods.
If you're into SMOD we recommend you to try it out, because this "update" is not made mainly for SMOD devs, but also users that love SMOD but are unable to play it due to Steam and Half-Life 2 updates.
